Shankaraghtta, Feb 23: Ashokram D R chief editor of Eedina.com webportal opined that, Digital technology redefined the speed element of the print journalism. All print media outlets have started their digital version which means there is less scope for print newspapers’ journalism which is considered as slow in these days. Now a days only quick reach element decides and narrates the presence of media.

He was delivering the inaugural speech at a one-day national seminar on “Digital Media Journalism: Challenges and Prospects” which was jointly organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and its alumni associations in the honor of the Dr. D S Poornananda, a retired professor of the same department. He added, 24x7 tv channels and digital media news platforms added a speed and timeliness elements for journalism. But common people who are active in social media platforms are also challenging the professional digital media in case rapid reach.


Prof. Arulchelvan Sriram, Director of the Electronic and Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC), College of Engineering, Chennai delivered the keynote address where he said, each new technology invented with the aim of overcoming the previous technologies limitations. But its positive and negative usage depends on the users. Low cost, multimedia approach, user friendly nature are the advantages of digital technology, which can be used greatly for the upliftment of society and country.


After receiving the felicitation Prof. D S Poornananda addressed the gathering and told, each new technology gave a hope of bringing good in society. It was believed that invention of Telegraph binds countries, radio establishes peace, biotechnology ends hunger. But it has not happened likewise digital technology is greatly using to spread hate, violence, fake news, communism. At the same time there are many fact checking websites like alt news, web qoof, alternative media outlets and PARI kind of organizations are using the digital technology. They will be the hope for us he told.


In his presidential speech Prof. S K Naveen Kumar, Registrar of Evaluation, Kuvempu University opined that, revolution has happened in the area of communication but challenges for digital journalism posed by the social media platforms like facebook, twitter, Instagram. Professionals. Learning new software, fact checking techniques, apps usage will open new avenues to positive journalism.


In his introductory speech Dr. Sathyaprakash M R chairman of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication stated that, digital technology was efficiently used by the journalists like Siddharth vardaraja, Siddharth Bhatia, M K Venu, Muhammad Zubair, Pratik Sinha, Abhinanda sekhri, Madhu Tehran in building alternative journalism in our country which is sole hope to fight against the social evils like hate, communism, fake news etc.,


In this occasion, departments’ alumni association honorary president Prof. Sathish kumar, Prof. Varghese, teaching faculty, research scholars, alumni members, and 60 students from Kuvmepu university’s UG colleges were present.
